Senator Stefano bringing key senate committee to region to discuss war on blight on Tuesday

LEMONT FURNACE – Senator Pat Stefano (R-Fayette/Somerset/Westmoreland) will host a public hearing on ongoing local and statewide efforts to eradicate blight with a key Senate committee.

The Senate Majority Policy Committee, chaired by Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks), will conduct a public hearing on Tuesday, September 5 at 10 a.m. at the Magerko Auditorium at Penn State Fayette – The Eberly Campus, 2201 University Drive, Lemont Furnace, PA 15456.

“Wherever I go in my district blight is an issue that are challenging municipalities of all sizes,” Stefano said. “We want to bring in key players in this ongoing war to hear about ideas and take those to Harrisburg to enact real change and provide new tools that will help municipalities in our region to combat this ongoing problem. I’m pleased that municipal officials from Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland counties will be able to bring their challenges and ideas to my colleagues.”

Senator Argall, who also chairs the bicameral and bipartisan Statewide Blight Task Force, said the issue is not just a big city problem, but one that affects many communities across the state, especially those that have seen population shifts.

“Coming from the heart of the anthracite coal industry, we’ve seen communities lose 80 percent of their population over many decades. Those drastic population shifts lead to major blight problems in many of the communities I represent in the northeast,” Argall said. “In his short time in the Senate, Senator Stefano has been a leader on this issue and has demonstrated that he will listen to local stakeholders to put their ideas into action in Harrisburg. We want to come and learn from those stakeholders as to how the Senate can be a partner in this effort.”

The public is invited to attend.
