Last week, Olivia Hay of Somerset Area High School visited the capitol for the YMCAโs Youth Advocacy Day. She spoke to us in support of the Yโs โWalkable Communitiesโ initiative highlighting the importance of having safe sidewalks, bike lanes, and right of ways, especially in rural communities. Great job, Olivia!

This week, the governor signed my legislation, which would adjust an outdated requirement for a qualified mechanic to perform an oil change every 100 hours on all diesel-powered equipment used by mining companies, into law.
Act 9, formerly Senate Bill 115, amends Pennsylvaniaโs Bituminous Coal Mine Safety Act to more appropriately reflect the needs of today`s equipment, as opposed to equipment from decades ago. The former requirement was a wasteful practice, and Iโm hopeful this change will lead to more efficient processes for mine operators.

๐ฃ The Early Childhood Education Caucus rallied with child care and pre-K students, teachers and parents as well as other advocates to underscore the worsening impacts of the PAโs early learning teacher shortage and further call for support to early childhood care and education.
The Learning Lamp`s Dr. Leah Spangler and speakers from multiple industries detailed how low teacher compensation fuels the shortage which leads to a growing number of child care and pre-K classroom closures, thus driving up waitlists and creating a burden on working families.
Thank you to my co-chairs Senator Judy Schwank, Rep. Pat Harkin, PA State Rep. Shelby Labs and our partnering organizations, Start Strong PA, Pre-K for PA and the Pennsylvania Early Learning Investment Commission, for coming together to highlight the critical need to support the workforce behind our workforce: child care.
