HARRISBURG – Sen. Pat Stefano (R-32) today announced the approval of more than $9.9 million in state funding for critical water system improvements in Fayette County from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).
PENNVEST awarded a combination of grants and low-interest loans to support two separate projects that will improve water quality for residents in Uniontown, North Union Township, South Union Township and Masontown Borough.
“Access to clean, safe and reliable drinking water is paramount, but the cost of upgrading aging infrastructure can be overwhelming for local governments and ratepayers,” Stefano said. “This funding is a major relief for these municipalities in Fayette County.”
The first project, led by Pennsylvania American Water Company, will receive a $2.9 million grant and a $2.4 million low-interest loan to replace approximately 389 lead service lines at locations approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
“Removing aging lead service lines is essential to ensuring access to quality drinking water for thousands of residents spanning multiple municipalities,” Stefano said. “This investment will protect the health of our communities and further modernize the water system infrastructure in the Uniontown area.”
The second project will receive a $975,000 grant and a $3.5 million low-interest loan, allowing Masontown Borough to install exterior meter pits and replace 1,225 water meters at all service connections. This upgrade is expected to significantly reduce water loss, as existing meters are currently located inside homes.
“By upgrading water meters and moving them outside, the borough can better monitor usage, reduce waste and improve overall efficiency,” Stefano said. “This is an improvement that will deliver long-term value for both the community and ratepayers.”
PENNVEST provides funding for the design and construction of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater projects across Pennsylvania.
