Stefano Announces $17 Million in State Assistance for Major Water System Upgrades in Somerset County

HARRISBURG – Sen. Pat Stefano (R-32) announced the approval of $17 million in state funding for critical sewage system improvements in Somerset County from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST).

PENNVEST awarded grant funding to Somerset Borough for sewer system improvements including the replacement or rehabilitation of approximately 40,000 feet of sanitary sewer piping, 200 sanitary sewer manholes and 100 stonewater drainage basins (inlets) as well as the installation of approximately 6,000 feet of stormwater pipe.

“These improvements to Somerset’s sewer infrastructure are essential to protecting public health as well as supporting economic growth,” Stefano said. “The completion of this project is necessary to deliver long-term value for the community and local ratepayers by improving reliability and reducing costly repairs to the system in the future.”

The project is designed to address long-standing issues with infiltration and inflow in the system. Upon completion, this will resolve structural defects as well as stormwater discharges that have compromised the system’s performance.

PENNVEST provides funding for the design and construction of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater projects across Pennsylvania.
